1939 Sunbeam Talbot 3 litre saloon.
Photographs of cars needing identification arrive here quite regularly. Steve sent this photo over, on behalf of a friend who is doing research into her family's past, hoping that the make of car could be identified. Usefully the car's registration can clearly be seen - FKA 9. This Liverpool-area registration series first came into use in January 1939, and given that this was only the 9th vehicle to be registered, confirms the approximate date of this car's registration. The car is a Sunbeam Talbot, most likely a 3 litre. Period photographs of a similar car can be seen on the Sunbeam Talbot 3.5 litre photo page, while a recent shot of a preserved 3 litre can be seen on this page, in the classic car photos section.

In 1939 a 3 litre saloon would have cost 415 GBP, while the larger 4 litre version would have relieved its new owner of 455 GBP. The 3 litre car was powered by a 3,181cc six-cylinder engine, and rated at 20.8HP (RAC). Both the 3 litre and smaller 10hp Sunbeam Talbots were introduced shortly after the purchase of the Sunbeam and Talbot car firms by the Rootes Group.
