Road Rover Series 2 prototype.
The Road Rover was intended to fit in between Rover's road cars and their established Land Rover off-road range. The first design was based around a P4 chassis and (despite early ideas about 4x4) ended up with rear wheel drive. The Series 2 (as shown here) was a more refined interpretation of the theory. Aluminium body panels were used and a six cylinder engine was envisaged for the boxy Road Rover's engine bay. In 1959 the design work was shelved. A few years later work began on a new 4x4 for the road - culminating in the 4wd V8 Range Rover.
